The "Speed Tweaks" extension provides a list to almost all the settings that you may need to alter in order to enhance Firefox's speed. The settings page suggests recommended values, however, it is recommended to change each value one by one and see its performance improvement. Note that not all the recommended values are useful for all users. You need to play with these prefs to find those that are working for you. There is a reset button in the options page if you decided to start over. The extension supports Firefox on Desktop and Android and is e10s compatible.

FAQs

  1. What can I expect from Speed Tweaks (SpeedyFox) extension?

Unless some other extensions claiming that that have done internal changes to the Firefox core resulting in better speed performance, this extension does not claim so. In fact it does noting except allowing you to alter a few speed related preferences. The good news is all these settings are collected in a single place with a note to the recommended value.

  2. What's new in this version?

    Please check the Logs section.

  3. Aside from modifying Firefox's built-in settings offered by this extension, can I still increase my Firefox performance?

Your Firefox browser might have been stacked up with unnecessary data. Please read and follow Top Ways To Make Your Slow Mozilla Firefox Browser Fast Again blog post to freshen up you browser.

  4. How can I use Speed Tweaks (SpeedyFox) extension?

Well, the extension literally has no UI! Instead all the settings are collected in the preferences page. Simply open Firefox's add-ons page and then go to the extension's preferences page. You can alter all the speed (network) related preferences there. It is recommended to take a look at the note of each preference to have an idea what the recommended value for that particular preference is.

  5. I have done many changes to experiment with the extension and now I have no idea what the defaults are. Any way to reset back all the prefs?

Sure, at the end of this list, there are two buttons. One to reset all preferences back to their factory value, and the other one to change them all according to the recommended values.

  6. Can I even gain more speed when all the settings are set as recommended?

If you are on Firefox desktop, I recommend to give Policy Control a try. With this extension, you have full control over the resources your browser accepts or rejects. For instance you can turn off images and web-fonts partially or entirely to speed up your browsing experience.

  7. What is the recommended value for browser.cache.use_new_backend?

You can use the new cache backend by setting this pref to 1, read more here https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=913807.

  8. Where are these recommended values come from?

All these recommended values are from Tor Browser version 4.5.3.

  9. Can I use this extension in Firefox Android?

Yes, one reason why the extension has no UI is to have it in both desktop and android versions of Firefox browser.
